Iraq’s recent history includes two far reaching events, on the 2 August 1990 Iraq’s invasion into Kuwait and on 19 March 2003 the US/UK invasion into Iraq. Whether political leaders will draw lessons from these events will be, at best, questionable. Iraqis continue to be wronged. Danger to life and turmoil remain a cruel part of Iraq’s reality in early 2013. The collective suffering of a nation is visibly all pervasive. It can not be hidden.

Persecution of members of the Palestinian community in Iraq began almost immediately after the US led invasion in April 2003. Palestinians were subject to harassment, targeted attacks, kidnapping, abduction, torture and extra-judicial killings by the Iraqi government and militias

An International Conference of “Solidarity with the Palestinian & Arab Prisoners and Detainees in Israeli Occupation Jails", sponsored by the League of Arab States and hosted by the Republic of Iraq, will be held on 11 & 12 of December 2012 in Baghdad.

During the height of Iraq's civil war, neighbouring Syria was a sanctuary for Iraqis – but as the Syrian conflict has intensified, Iraqi refugees have again been forced to flee, this time back to their homeland, as the BBC's Caroline Hawley reports from Baghdad.
